Typhoon Ketsana struck Laos and Cambodia on the 29th September causing widespread flooding and damage. The remote provinces were badly affected as water swept through villages destroying homes, crops and water supplies.
In the Attapeu region in Laos, over 6,000 people in 28 villages are affected, whilst 5,500 people have lost their homes in Cambodia. There are now shortages of food, medical supplies and there is no clean drinking water. This is increasing the threat of diseases such as cholera.
“These communities have already been suffering from food shortages in the recent past. This disaster has completely ravaged the lives of poor people with very scarce resources” said Sally Sukulku, Health Poverty Action's manager in Laos. “Our priority now is to provide the worst affected communities with food, water and shelter.”
Health Poverty Action staff in both Laos and Cambodia are now helping coordinate the relief effort. We are providing food, water and medical supplies. These floods have come at the worst possible time, washing away the harvest, leading to the risk of long term food shortages.
Health Poverty Action along with other agencies will continue to provide support and supplies to those affected, but to do this we need your support. Please help us provide urgent assistance to people who have lost their homes and possessions in the storm. We need your support urgently – please give now. Your support will save lives.
