More than 1,500 Nicaraguan school children will have more chance to reach their potential thanks to a project that aims to prevent violence in schools.

Health Poverty Action's work aims to develop a ‘culture of peace’ in schools and communities, to give vulnerable children more of a chance.

During a previous project in Siuna, a considerable number of children were found to be at risk of regular violence from adults and other pupils. This three-year project informs children, parents and teachers about the importance of children’s clubs and recreational activities. Weekly radio programmes, printed media and school festivals all help to educate parents, teachers and children to recognise and avoid sources and causes of violence.

Working in eight schools, the project team has co-ordinated with authorities to identify and assist children at risk.

The project uses two key strategies.  Firstly, it aims to increase knowledge and respect for the rights and needs of children in relation to violence.  Consequently, parents, teachers and children improve their attitudes and practices in relation to violence against children.

Weekly radio programmes provide information to communities about violence against children.
