Background
Cambodia is one of
the poorest countries in South East Asia and has been severely affected
by war and over 40 years of political instability. Recent surveys
indicate a dramatic decline in the health of indigenous people and the
quality of their health services.
Health Unlimited has worked with hill
tribes in Ratanakiri
(right arrow on map) since 1990 and war-affected communities in
Preah
Vihear (left arrow on map) since 1995 to reduce infant and maternal mortality through water and
sanitation, health education, nutritional advice and new health posts.
View
here a short video about our work in Preah Vihear.
In 2007 we started working in
Mondulkiri
(lower arrow on map) also focussing on reducing maternal and child
mortality, through advocacy and empowerment.
In the southern province of
Kampot, near the border with
Vietnam, a community based health project
managed by Health Unlimited in 2004 which also incorporated
an advocacy element to empower women, youth and landless poor families
to negotiate their entitlements to appropriate health services.
We also established a popular radio project the
Cambodia Health Education Media Service (CHEMS)
that aims to
inform and educate listeners in sexual and reproductive health issues.
