Where the money goes

We work with the Quechua people, who live in the Andean highlands of Peru. They have their own language and a distinct culture. They were caught up in the civil war between government forces and the 'Shining Path' Guerrilla movement. Thousands of people were killed and many more had to leave their villages.

The war has now ended, but the suffering continues. Health Unlimited is helping the communities to rebuild their shattered lives. We are building 'Qampi Wasis' which are small health centres in remote areas.

We are also training local people to be 'Community Health Workers'. They are trained to diagnose and treat illnesses such as malaria, diarrhoea and chest infections among their community. They also teach people how to avoid getting ill. We are also training Traditional Birth Attendants to deliver babies safely at home.

In villages benefitting from the Stamp Aid Appeal, appeal funds will be used to

  • build a Qampi Wasi or health post
  • train and equip two community health workers
  • train and equip at least one traditional birth attendant (village midwife)
  • buy medicinal plants and equipment for making traditional remedies
  • buy a mountain bike to allow health workers to respond to emergencies more quickly than if they travel on foot
  • fund environmental health activities for children, such as hygiene kits and tree-planting
  • fund football kits and art materials for children
