We've hit the target... and more!

We made a great start to 2001 when we hit the target of 100,000 envelopes of stamps and exploded the Stamp Aid totaliser. This will help build and equip 3 Qampi Wasis (Health Posts) in the villages of Llachllan, Qanqayllu and Pampalca in the Peruvian Andes.

We then set a second target of 300,000 envelopes which will mean even more help for the Quechua people living high up in the Andes, miles from a chemist, doctor or hospital.

Steve Hocking, Editor Blue Peter said, “Everyone at Blue Peter has been amazed at the phenomenal response from our viewers. Not only have we reached our target quickly, but with continued contributions, we will be able to make an even bigger difference to the lives of the Quechua communities in Peru.”

And that is exactly what happened!

Thanks to your efforts we managed to light-up our second totaliser, reaching the target of 300,000 in a blaze of fireworks! This is enough to help NINE villages. That's three times as many people as we could at the beginning of the year. And it's all down to you.

But it doesn't stop there. Because of your cutting and collecting we've now received a total of 687,000 envelopes; that's equivalent to every person in the UK sending in three stamps each. We now have enough support to help ELEVEN villages this year and another TEN next year. In addition your stamps will pay for an extra vehicle and driver so our team can travel to the ten new villages.

AND there's still more. With what you've raised we are also able to help improve mother and child health care in two government health posts. With all the extra donations we're also going to be able to buy 32 bicycles which will help health workers get help to emergency cases even more quickly.

Finally THANKS AGAIN - we really appreciate all the hard work you have put in to make the appeal such a success.
