Will you
help save mothers and babies lives?
Join Just Walk on 10th May.
You can
choose to walk for 20km or 60km.
In the remote communities we work with, women often have to
walk similar distances while heavily pregnant in order to reach
the nearest health centre just before delivery or sometimes,
even in case of emergency. In the best case scenario, they would
be transported in a hammock (photo), on the back of a motorbike
or have to wait for a passing sand truck just to get to the
nearest maternity unit.
Health Unlimited has been supporting women in their fight
to achieve their reproductive health rights ever since it was
established in 1984. The need to address maternal health urgently has
never slipped down our agenda – nor will it.
"The
community used to be "frightened" when a mother was pregnant
and nearing the time of birth: now we feel happier knowing mother, and
baby,
have a chance to survive."
This is the
quote from a group of leaders in Tambakka who spoke of the previous fear
and pain of seeing mothers leave the village on hammock and did not know
if they would ever see them again. Find out more about this issue
here.
We do not
accept that the international community should congratulate itself if
the Maternal Mortality Ratio is reduced by 75% by 2015 according to the
Millennium Development Goals; rather we believe that the life of
every woman is important, however poor, however marginalised, and
however discriminated against she may be.
Do you think you could raise money in aid of Health
Unlimited with friends, at work, within your local community or faith group and help us spread
the word about our work with remote marginalised communities?
If
yes, take action on 10th May.
To show solidarity with these women, join Just Walk on 10th May
and help raise funds in aid of Health Unlimited so we can
continue saving mothers and babies lives.
